Evolutionof Health Information Technology
HealthInformation Technology is in the simplest terms an umbrella frameworkthat describes the comprehensive management of health informationacross computerized systems and its secure exchange between serviceproviders, consumers and other relevant entities. This is achieved byensuring that important clinical data such as population surveillancefor and monitoring of infectious disease outbreaks is availedquickly.
TheHealth Information Technology (HIT) has seen its journey from the60’s when the IT drivers were very expensive mainframes and storageand were only installed for accounting purposes. This soon changedwith the need for better communication leading to their customizationto discreet departmental systems (Information Resources ManagementAssociation & Khosrow-Pour, 2002). These never lasted as theybecame islands onto themselves and this was not favorable. There wasneed to pull significant information from both clinical and financialsystems and this called for integration of applications so thatfinancial and clinical systems could talk to each other.
Eventually,the main healthcare drivers were more integrational and outcomebased. There were enough technology and bedside clinical applicationsto make a serious run at commercial real time clinical decisionsupport. From the light of this evaluation it is clear that the mostsignificant trend on the expansion is based on the need forintegration of crucial information and effective and fast sharing ofthe same. Some scholars argue that HIT should be profit centeredrather than cost focused for health care providers (Houston &HIMSS, 2011).
Thefield of health care is one that calls for quick and smoothcommunication as well as precision a quality that is readilyavailable in Health Information Management Systems (HIMS). Forinstance, in the case of an outbreak of an infectious disease sayebora, it is critical that information be readily available andaccessible in order to be in a position to combat that immediatethreat. The challenge that comes with HIMS is when the informationentered is incorrect or inaccurate it is likely to affect a very bignumber thus there is need for caution.
