Theimportance of the police in maintaining order in the society cannotbe overemphasized as a basic need for the community. This makessecurity professionals and police officers an important part of thecommunity through the maintenance of law and order. However, policeofficers face a number of challenges in the 21stcentury that affect the delivery of the service. One of the greatestchallenges that the police face is the lack of cooperation from thesociety. There is a consistent rift between the police officers andthe people in the society. According to Ramsey(2014),this is because of the lack of social education on the need tocooperate with police officers.

Asa result of the gap, the second major challenge erupts in thenegative treatment from the society. Therefore, members of thesociety fail to pass the necessary information that police officersneed to protect them. While the members of the community remain animportant arm of policing tasks, their role in passing information iseven more critical to the success of the police officers. Inaddition, the eruption of conflicts between the community and thepolice leads to the widening of the gap and creates further suspicion(Battset al, 2012). For example, the actions of the conflict between thepolice and the Ferguson community led to protests, making the work ofthe police officers more challenging.

Technologicaladvancement of methods used to commit crime and the techniquescriminals use to evade justice also poses challenges to policeofficers. In the 21stcentury, crime has become complex and the perpetrators adopted morecomplicated methods of committing, evading and covering crime. Therefore, the policing authorities are sometimes left to play catchup to the organized criminal actors. According toBattset al (2012), the technological advancement ends to be a challenge ifthe police officers are not well equipped with the modern methods offighti9ng crime. In addition, the consistently changing criminalenvironment leads to the gap between police officers and thecriminals. As a result of the challenge, some criminals get away withcrime, which is challenging to the police officers.

Similarly, lack of proper weapons to fight crime is another challenge thatgreatly affects the performance of the police. The problem is morechallenging if the police officers go to fight crime with criminalswho have better weapons and firepower than they have (Ramsey,2014).At the same time, the police officers may not have the specialtraining to deal with every kind of crime that they are required totackle (DiscoverPolicing, 2015).According toBattset al (2012), the police of the 21stcentury need to have weapons that match the 21stcentury technological advancement. If not up to the state of the art,the activity of police officers will be limited to the ability oftheir arms and training.

Lackof proper remuneration is another challenge that the police officersin the 21stcentury face. The current century has an inconsistent economic statusthat is marked by inflation and high cost of living (Ramsey,2014).As a result of the economic status, the salaries and financialbenefits of the police officers need to be increased consistently. Atthe same time, the remuneration of the police officers needs, tomatch those of the other professions, so that they can be motivatedto work. However, the low salaries and poor working conditionspresent a great challenge to their motivation, and eventually servicedelivery. To improve the work of the police officers, thesechallenges need to be addressed and make their professional, workingand human conditions favorable for performance.
